ew to this month’s issue is the
IC
Tower
Crane Index of the world’s largest tower
crane-owning companies. It is the first
time that this long-established ranking has
appeared in the September issue.
In previous years the
IC
Tower Index has
been in June alongside the main
IC
50 Index of
mobile crane owners. I hope this move further
strengthens the ranking and this, the second of
our two annual tower crane special issues.
It is unusual to get an opportunity to learn about the crane
market in Japan so I am particularly pleased to present the in-depth
tower crane-related insight with a focus on the large high capacity
luffing jib models from manufacturer IHI that appears on page
21. It is contributed by world-renowned tower crane expert
Heinz-Gert Kessel.
Continuing with the tower crane theme is the preview of our
third International Tower Cranes conference. The news update on
page 29 outlines the high quality content and value of attending
this unique specialized event dedicated to the tower crane industry.
There is still time to arrange your visit to Berlin.
Even the rope feature this month includes a focus on tower
cranes in terms of the particular demands in cranes on high rise
applications where proper multi-layer spooling at high hoisting
speed over long falls of rope is a key factor. While the ropes for
such applications are still all made from drawn steel wire, I reckon
that you should soon look out for alternatives in the form of largely
synthetic fibre ropes using carbon, polyester, aramid, and other
fibres, maybe also as part of composite constructions with some
steel content. The feature starts on page 45.
Finally, I would like to draw your attention to the annual TopLift
contest. The shortlist and voting form, are on pages 16 to 18. Please
