Cherry opens another
Houston recycling plant
Texas, USA, based Cherry’s Stabilised Materials Division has
opened a new production plant with what it says is the largest
production capacity of its now six plants in the Greater Houston
area at 725 tonnes (800 tons) per hour.
The new plug mill plant will produce stabilised sand and road
base material for companies in Fort Bend County and the Richmond
Rosenberg area and is located to the southwest of Houston,
an area of significant growth largely due to the Grand Parkway
construction project. With its six plants, Cherry can now produce
more than 225,000 tonnes (250,000 tons) of material a month.
Cherry is one of the largest recyclers in Texas and the Gulf
Coast, recycling more than 1.8 million tonnes (2 million tons) of
concrete and asphalt, as well as thousands of tonnes of steel
per year.

replaces the company’s facilities
that were devastated during the
two major earthquakes that hit
the region two years ago.
The new German operation is
headed by Christophe Jarrin as
managing director, with a sales

Award win for DRIDS
The NFDC’s DRIDS (Demolition
& Refurbishment Information
Data Sheets) has been awarded
the accolade of the Dickinson
Dees Sustainable Construction &
Demolition Award at this year’s
Chartered Institute of Waste
Management (CIWM) Awards
for Environmental Excellence.
The DRIDS project is funded
through UK’s Construction
Industry Training Board (CITB)
Growth Fund and will provide
the industry with information
concerning the recycling of
materials that the industry
produces during its daily
business.
NFDC chief executive Howard
Button said: “Winning this award
has been a fantastic achievement.
With growing legislation and
tighter regulation in the design
and construction of buildings,
structures and infrastructure, the
demolition and refurbishment
industry has to be better
informed – the DRIDS help to
address this issue and provide the
industry with the support they
need.”
“Once the project is complete,
we anticipate the industry will be
in a strong position to influence
modern building methods
and prove that unsustainable
demolition processes can be
adopted.”
The CITB Growth Fund is
a £10m investment aimed at
providing construction employers
with support in developing key
skills that they need to grow their
business and is one of the ways
that CITB is investing Levy funds
to make businesses competitive
now and in the future.
Steve Geary, skills strategy
director for CITB said: “Among
many other things, the Growth
Fund focusses on improving
employers’ ability to respond to
environmental sustainability and
management skills. The DRIDS
project is a perfect example of
informing the industry of vital
changes to the demolition and
refurbishment sector.
