DECEMBER 2013

etter than last year seems to be the
consensus on the state of the industry
for 2013 – not another year to forget
like 2012, then. The overall picture is one of
improvement but there is still an extreme
range of activity levels, according to geography,
crane type and so on. It is by no means clear
improvement across the board. A relatively poor
year for manufacturers as a whole is reported in
our regular Business news section, on page 13, despite the
IC
Share
Index increasing by 14.3 % in value over the last 12 months.
Of the industry sectors worldwide, the busiest are still heavy
lifting and wind energy. Loads continue to get heavier, especially
in the construction of offshore rig and FPSO modules, as cranes
and other super heavy lifting devices and methods are developed
to handle them. Already somewhat impressive at 6,500 tonnes,
Korean company TGHI has added a mere 1,000 tonnes to the
capacity of its tower erection system, in an upgrade that takes it
to 7,500 tonnes. See the heavy lifting feature on page 15 and the
product news on page 31.
Wind energy remains a major source of business, primarily
erection of new turbines. It is likely to continue that way too,
especially as the generating equipment ages, there is more
maintenance, more components need to be replaced and the
number of repairs increases. See the feature starting on page 23.
One of the last industry events of the year was International
Tower Cranes (ITC) held in Germany last month. It was a
well-received one day conference dedicated to the tower crane
industry. Having been held three times now ITC has become
established and is well attended by leaders in the sector. More than
140 people from 60 companies and 19 countries attended this year
and it had a distinctly friendly and family atmosphere. See the
ITC review on page 34.
Thank you to those who made the effort to cast a vote for our
Toplift contest. I was pleased to get more votes this year than last.
Find out the winner on page 39.
Finally, I would like to offer my best wishes on behalf of the
IC
team, for the holiday season and the new year.
