determine the readers’ favourite lifting job.
IC
reveals the results
TOPLIFT 2013
T
his year’s entries for the
IC
Top Lift
2013 competition included a range
of impressive lifts that were carried
out in challenging environments. In the
September issue of
IC
readers were asked to
pick their favourite from 10 lifting projects.
Readers then returned their votes by the
end of October to be counted.
The winning entry for this year’s
competition was number six,
Tandem
lifting
, from crane rental company Tiong
Woon, Singapore. The company used a
1,600 tonne capacity Terex CC 8800-1
lattice boom crawler and a 2,400 tonne
capacity, 120 m tall tower lift system in
tandem to lift a xylene splitter column
weighing 1,147 tonnes. The lift was carried
out at Jurong Aromatics Corporation’s
(JAC) complex at Jurong Island, Singapore.
Close behind in second place was entry

. The lift was carried
out by heavy lift and transport company
Mammoet, using one of its Mammoet
PTC 140 DS super heavy lift cranes with a
capacity of 3,200 tonnes. The crane lifted
the first spar section for a new offshore
platform going to the Gulf of Mexico. The
piece weighed 816 tonnes and was lifted at
a radius of 69 m. Gulf Marine Fabricators
(GMF) was the main contractor on
the project.
In third place was entry five,
Coastal
conditions
. For the lift a Manitowoc 18000
and a Manitowoc 16000, along with a third
support crane, were used to lift a main deck
from an offshore rig weighing 550 tons
(498 tonnes) at a specialised fabrication
yard in Lobito, Angola. The cranes are
owned by yard operator Sonamet, a joint
venture between Subsea 7 and Sonangol.
IC
would like to take this opportunity
to congratulate the winners and thank all
those who took the time to vote in this
prestigious contest.
If your company has completed a job
in the last couple of months or, if you do
one before mid-August 2014 that you
think should be entered for next year’s
TopLift competition, and/or it would make
an interesting site report in
International
Cranes and Specialized Transport
magazine,
please send the details to the editor, Alex
Dahm, at
or, by post,
to: KHL Group, Southfields, Southview
Road, Wadhurst, East Sussex TN5 6TP,
