10 new vessels for
the Royal Brewery in
Manchester, UK. DAVID

T
he Royal Brewery (originally named
the Albert Brewery) was built in
1875 and was taken over in 2008
by brewer Heineken for the production
of Foster's lager. As part of a renovation
project, ten new vessels were delivered
to the brewery, where already 1.2 billion
pints of beer are produced a year.
Manufactured in Germany, the vessels
each weigh 33 tonnes, measure 28.5 metres
long and 6 m wide. For the first part of
the journey, the vessels were transported
by road to the River Rhine, where they
were loaded onto barges and sailed to
the Europort in Rotterdam, Netherlands.
Once the vessels had arrived at Europort
they were transferred onto a pair of cargo
ships for the voyage to the Mersey estuary
in the north west of the UK.
Royal arrival
Once the vessels arrived at the Mersey
estuary they were moved from the docks
to the Royal Brewery by road. The original
plan for this part of the journey was for all
ten vessels to be brought into Ellesmere
Port docks by ship. From here they
would be unloaded onto road transport
