The Los AngelesMetroBoard
has approved the implementation of
a newmaster plan for the US city’s
UnionStation. It includes perimeter
improvements, building better
connectionswith neighbouring
areas and an environmental review.
Themaster plan is described
as, “An ambitious long-range
roadmap for L.A.’s single largest
public transit hub, from planning
to implementation,” by Grimshaw
Architects, one of the consultants
involved in developing themaster
plan.
The station opened in 1939
and primarily served passenger
trains connecting to cities across
California and the US. Ridership is
currently some 110,000 passenger
trips per day and is expected to
jump to nearly 197,000 trips per day
by 2040 as theMetroRail system
expands.
TheEastWestConnect consortium,
comprising Capella Capital, Lend
Lease, Bouygues Construction
Australia, Acciona, John Laing and
QIC, has won the US$ 5.9 billion
public private partnership (PPP)
contract for a new 6.6 km freeway
link in northern Melbourne,
Australia.
The project, calledEastWest Link
(Stage1), is thefirstphase inamajor
scheme to improve road networks
in theMelbourne region. Its initial
phase includes three interchanges
to connect the project with existing
roads, aswell as a future connection
to the port, twin 4.4 km three-lane

A consortium of Strabag, Salini
Impregilo, Consorzio Cooperative
Costruzioni CCC and Collini
Lavori has been awarded a € 300
million (US$ 378million) contract
to build the Eisack Undercrossing
section of the Brenner BaseTunnel.
Work on the scheme located on
the border with Italy and Austria
scheduled to begin this year with
a planned construction time of
around eight years.
The contract section is located at
the southern end of the Brenner
Base Tunnel near the town of
Franzensfeste (Fortezza) in the
Province of Bozen (Bolzano) in
SouthTyrol.
The
project
includes
the
construction of the twomain tubes
of the future Brenner Base Tunnel
with a total length of 4.3 km, as
well as two connecting tunnels to
theexistingBrennerRailway, aswell
as work on existing infrastructure.
Thomas Birtel, CEO of Strabag,
said, “This is an extremely
demandingproject from a technical
point of view, as it under crosses the
riverEisack, theBrennerMotorway,
the state highway and the Brenner
Railway with a very low rock
overburden. We look forward to
this challenge.”

expect their governments to do

was pleased to sign the contract

The consortium will finance,
design and construct the road, and
go on to operate it for a 25 years
following its five-year construction
phase.

Freeway link forMelbourne
Plans for the US$ 4 billion
Paramount Entertainment resort
at Swanscombe, UK have moved a
step closer after initial government
approval has been granted.
Project director Fenlon Dunphy,
of London Resort Company
Holdings, confirmed it will begin
construction in 2019, with the
tendering process beginning early
in 2015. The major project with
the USmovie company is to create
27,000 jobs and deliver significant
infrastructure upgrades during its

Developers behind the theme
park aim to make it the “best
entertainment attraction inEurope”
and believe it will deliver a range of
economic benefits.
Its facilities will include a
centrepiece theme park attraction
linked to Paramount and based
around some of the movie studio’s
biggest blockbuster films.
In addition, there will be a water
park, sporting facilities and hotel
accommodation for 5,000 visitors.
