Making hay
G
rowingup,mygrandfather owned an excavating
company inEastTexas. All of his children, including
mymother,worked for the company, doing
everything from estimating, bidding anddrivingdump trucks to
operating thebigdozers and scrapers and repairing equipment.
When Iwas old enough todrive, Iworked for the company
too.My favorite jobwas pickingup jobblueprints at theDodge
PlanRoom. I recallmygrandfather takingme to theDodge
PlanRoom and explaining thatweneeded tobe the first ones
there toget theplans for the jobs hewanted tobid. “In thedirt
business, youhave tomakehaywhile the sun shines,”he said.
There’s a lot ofwisdom in this adage. It’s also truewhen it
comes toweather, which isoneof thebiggest deterrents to the
construction industry. Thispastwinter is a case inpoint. The
extremely coldand long seasonaffected somuchbusiness.
Crane and equipmentOEMs reportedadecrease in salesdue
toprojectsdelayeddue toweather.Discussingher company’s
performance this year,KayeGreene-Smith, president,
Pilotcarz4u, said, “It ismybelief sinceour industrygets into
full swing in late springafter the ice thaws through late fall, the
best numbers are to come.We are an industrydrivenby certain
factors suchasweather, economy, andgasprices.”Seeour
IndustryFocus: PilotCarsonpage52.
But Springhas finally come and the industryhas gearedup for
a tonofworkduring the sunnydaysof summer and fall. Truck
cranes areknown forbeingable to “makehay”due to their ease
ingetting toandperforming jobsquickly. JohnSkelly talked to
OEMs about the truck cranemarket anddetermined thatwhile
the rangeof cranes in this categoryhas shrunk, themarket has
not. SeeourProduct Focus: TruckCranesonpage37.
