Gone year
S
o2014 just flewby, but I say that everyyear. The
first sixmonths of the yearwewere consumedwith
previewing and reporting aboutConExpo. Everyone
was upbeat and confident. By late summer optimism seemed to
wane just abit. But the goodnews, fromwhatwe arehearing, is
that 2015 is shapingup tobe a great year for business.
Lastmonth, I encouraged readers to share theiroutlook for
2015. ShawnFotiwithClarkRiggingandRental, locatednear
Buffalo,NY, respondedwith this forecast: “Buffalo ison the rise
and there aremany interestingprojectsbothunder construction
and just beginning. TerryPegulapurchased theBuffaloBills and
is finishing theHarborCenter,whichhe callsHockeyHeaven.
Groundhasbeenbrokenon the largest solarpanel production
facility in theworld, SolarCity, ownedbyElonMusk.Our
medical campus andpartnereduniversities are addinganew
children’shospital andadjoining state-of-the-art biomedical
research/education facility.Heck, wehad five tower cranes in
Buffalo this year, possibly themost ever.Mypoint is, the2015
outlook forBuffalo is very strong.”
Whenweplan themagazine, wemake a list ofwhowewant to
interview. Realizinghowbusy everyone is, sometimes the folks
wewant to talk toareout ona jobor toobusydoingbusiness.
Suchwas the casewith the tower crane articleby JohnSkellyon
page50.A coupledaysbeforepresstime,we receivedan email
with comments fromStephen Jehle, president, P&J/Arcomet.
While itwas too late for the article, here’s Jehle’s two cents:
“Thingshavepickedupagreat deal in theU.S. tower crane
market. Rental rateshave increased significantlyandutilization
rates are in the90percentile. [Therehasbeen] some fleet
renewal but not significant fleet growth. Thishas kept supply
tight andpushedup rental rates.Wehavenoticeda slight shift
away from the300meter ton cranes andmore towards the400s
or 500s even. Luffing tower cranes are increasing indemand
due to some cities [having] air rights regulations. Rateson these
cranes tend tobemuchhigher, but in someplaces it’s theonly
typeof crane the customer canuse.”
Lastmonthwehad this incredible coverphoto shot byMike
Brewington, who spent 44years in the industry, the last 39with
KiewitCompanies.Hewas amastermechanicon theTilikum
Crossingproject, andhe cameout of retirement this year to
supervise the safe removal of the tower craneson the job.We
inadvertentlydidn’t giveBrewington credit for
thephoto. Someof thebest photoswe’ve run
through theyearshavebeen shot by crane
operators, projectmanagers, truckdrivers,
etc. Thanks y’all!
This issue is chock full of interesting stuff,
includingour annualTransport 50 ranking
onpage43.
And finally, onbehalf of the
ACT
andKHLGroup teams,wewishyou
awonderful holiday seasonand
prosperousNewYear.
