the recognitionof SC&RA’sDouglasBall,
who retired aftermore than13 years of
service as theAssociation’sVicePresident
of Transportation.
InApril, thehighly anticipatedAnnual
Conference brought together owners,
seniormanagement and top executives
inBocaRaton, FL. The 740 in attendance
set a record– including104 first-timers
and90 exhibitors. As a result, education
and committeemeetingswere at capacity
throughout theweek. TheFoundation
Gala attracted263people in a showof
support for theFoundation’s efforts to
provide industry research, education and
scholarships and grants to students and
company employees looking to enter, or
improvewithin, the industry.
This year, TheFoundation awarded
three grants and seven scholarships,
totaling$26,000. The scholarship
recipientswere: CalebBrack, Jonathan
Caldwell, SaraCrowley, StevenMcLean,
SamsonClayMeyer, LaceyRucker and
Jamal Shaheen. The grant recipientswere:
DavidDague, ErickaDavis andDonald
Hinds, Jr.
James Lommawas also awarded at
theAnnual Conferencewith SC&RA’s
GoldenAchievementAward– for
outstanding contributions to the industry.
And as a fitting end to aproductive
week, outgoing SC&RAPresident Ron
Montgomery, of IntermountainRigging
andHeavyHaul, graciously turnedover
the gavel to incomingPresidentAlan
Barnhart, of Barnhart, whodelivered an
inspiring acceptance speech.
As 2014moved along, theCrane
&RiggingWorkshopbookended
the SC&RA schedule for the year in
September inDallas. A record85booths
enhanced theExhibitCenter floor this
year, andof the 552 in attendance, 94
were first-timers.
The annualWorkshopbrought together
the industry’s topmanagers, crane
operators and safetydirectors todiscuss
regulatory and legislativeupdates, aswell
as safety issues. The gathering also serves
as a keynetworkingopportunity, and a
chance to checkout some of thenewest
equipment andproducts in theExhibit
Center.
New at this year’sWorkshopwas the
debut of the SC&RAMeetingApp.
Thedigital appwill beusedduring all
meetings in the future. Features include:
attendee search,messaging, ability to
create your own schedule andnotes,
surveys andpolls,maps and even an
exhibit center booth layout.
Similarly engaging from a socialmedia
perspective, thepopular SC&RAPhoto
Contestswere introduced through
SC&RA’s Facebookpage – andwere an
immediate success.Over 375 entries
flowed in from12monthly contests.
ThePhotoContest is open toboth
members andnon-members (with a
wide range of acceptableprojects), and
offers participants a chance tohave their
winningphoto appear as SC&RA’s cover
photo for an entiremonth.
Products that continued toprove
popularwith SC&RAmembers in
2014were the SC&RAPermitManual
(Oversize/Overweight PermitManual)
and theOperatingCranesAroundPower
Lines training set (comprisedof both a
booklet and video). ThePermitManual,
withover 450pages ofmaterial available
at the clickof amouse, is themost
comprehensivedigitalmanual of its kind,
some ofwhich included:NorthCarolina
added save-haven access; Pennsylvania
increased validpermit length to five
days;Delaware increasedweekendhours
of service; andConnecticut expanded
weekendhours of service and increased
requirement for escort loadsmeasuring at
least 90 feet.
TheAssociation also continued tooffer
itsmembership aunique, partially self-
funded insuranceprogram for employee
health insurance in2014. SC&RA
beganworkingwithAssociationBenefit
Resources/Benovate (ABR/Benovate) in
2012, anddeveloped the SC&RAHealth
Benefit Plan, whichoffersmembers
ahealthcareprogram that could save
