TOWERCRANES
PRODUCT FOCUS
jiband large top-slewing tower cranes
increasing themost as the economy
continues to improve.
“While some rental segmentshave
returned to relativelyhealthy levels, it
will take aboosted economy spurredby
energyprojects, general constructionand
increasedgrowth inmixed-usehousing
markets to see substantial fleet growth,”
said JenSmitka, product specialist, tower
cranes,ManitowocCranes.
Taking advantage
CoastCraneCompany, a subsidiaryof
EssexRentalCorporation, is seeing longer
lead timesbetweenorderplacement and
start dates,which typicallyoccurs in
periodsof strongdemand.
“Our city crane fleet is rebounding
and is expected tobe around60percent
utilization,whileourhammerhead fleet
shouldbe above that,” saidGregBelcoff,
vicepresident,CoastCraneCompany.
Belcoff sees thedesired increased
pricing for rental rates as vulnerableuntil
utilization rates throughout the industry
reach equilibrium.
“We feel that sustainedutilization is the
keyaspect,” saidBelcoff. “Until all vendors
are at a solidutilization rate, pricing for
rental rates andancillary costs remain
volatile. That said,we are seeingmore
stabilityandmild increases in rental rates
in certainmodels.”
The tower crane industryhas an
interestingpredicament on theirhands.
After emerging from the economic
recession, the continued successof
themarket isnow in thehandsof
manufacturers and rental companies.Will
the industryheedAlanBarnhart’s advice
fromhis keynote address?
