n addition to the revised
Awards categories that go
to make up the 2014 World
Demolition Awards announced in
the last issue,
D&Ri
can announce
the introduction of a new Award
that will be presented at the
World Demolition Summit at the
NH Grand Hotel Krasnapolsky in
Amsterdam on November 6.
Simply entitled the 2014
World Demolition Award, it will
be presented to the company
who’s submission is considered
by the international judging
panel as being the best overall
entry, submitted in any relevant
category, of all those submitted
for the 2014 Awards.
This Award will be the final
presentation on the night and will
not be open to entries submitted
separately. In effect, this Award
will be the ‘best of the best’ and
will thus constitute the highest
accolade that the deserving
recipient could gain from their
peers in the global demolition
industry.
Entry forms for all the open
categories in the 2014 World
Demolition Awards are available
for download from www.
demolitionsummit.com. Every
submission must include a 1,200
word maximum Award Statement
but should also include all the
necessary project documentation
to allow the judging panel to
adequately verify that statement.
Submissions should also
include at least one relevant
high resolution photograph.
Should you have any questions
concerning either the compilation
or actual submission of your
entries, please contact Lindsay

First Summit
speakers announced
D&Ri
can announce the first
speakers who have provisionally
agreed to make presentations at
the 2014 World Demolition Summit
in Amsterdam on November 6.
From Australia will once again come Simon Gill from Liberty
Industrial. His presentation will cover the dismantling and
demolition work required at the Rio Tinto Hismelt pig iron smelting
plant at Kwanina, portions of which are being transferred to China
The first speaker from the UK has also given his provisional
agreement. The winning entry for the 2013 Civils Demolition
Award, a challenging offshore demolition project entitled ‘The
Demolition of the UK Ministry of Defence’s Upper Harbour
Ammunition Facility outside Gosport’ will be described by Michael
Corridon from Micor Ltd.
We are in the process of confirming other presentations that
will illustrate the best that the demolition industry has to offer
from around the world by looking at some of the highest profile,
challenging and demanding contracts carried out over the last few
months. We will announce more details of these as they become
available.
Sandvik has announced it is
to cease manufacturing at its
plant in Swadlincote, UK. The
factory makes mobile crushing &
screening equipment. Production
of these will be transferred to
the company’s Ballygawley plant
in Northern Ireland, which
manufactures similar machines.
The company said the
decision to phase out production
over the next 12 months followed
a review of its UK manufacturing
capacity and a supply chain
optimisation programme.
The closure will see 160 of
the 360 manufacturing jobs
in Swadlincote transferred to
Ballygawley. However, Sandvik
will continue to have offices
in Swadlincote for product
support, research & development,
sourcing, marketing and
aftermarket functions.
Sandvik managing director,
Terry Allison said: “Since the
major downturn in 2008/9, the
global market for our products
has not recovered as fast as we
had hoped. We are currently
running two factories at 50%
capacity. This is neither efficient
nor sustainable. In order to
stay competitive, we propose
moving all our production onto
the Ballygawley site, which is
the right size to meet both the
current and anticipated demand
for our mobile crushers and
screeners.”
Sandvik acquired the
Swadlincote and Ballygawley
factories with its purchase of
Extec and Fintec, respectively, in
May 2007.
