Once at the installation site, a 1,600 tonne
capacity Terex CC 8800-1 lattice boom
crawler crane and a 2,400 tonne capacity,
120 metre tall tower lift system by Tiong
Woon lifted the column in a tandem lift.
For the lift the CC 8800-1 had a 54 m main
boom in SSL configuration. The lift was
completed over two days.
Ang Kah Hong, Tiong Woon’s Group
Chairman and Managing Director said,
“We are privileged to be part of the team
to contribute towards the successful
completion of this project.
T
iong Woon in Singapore used a Terex
CC 8800-1 lattice boom crawler
crane to lift a xylene splitter column
weighing more than 1,000 tonnes.
The xylene splitter column, which is
the third largest in the world, measures
108 metres tall and weighs 1,147 tonnes.
It forms part of a petrochemical plant in
Singapore that will produce chemicals for
products that include nylon and polyester.
Once completed the site will be one of
Asia’s largest petrochemical plants.
The main client for the project is
SK E&C, an international engineering,
procurement and construction contractor.
The site is situated at Jurong Aromatics
Corporation’s (JAC) complex in Jurong
Island Singapore.
As part of the project Tiong Woon
constructed a temporary roll-on, roll-off
jetty on Jurong Island for the arrival of
the column.
From here the column was transported
to the site using two sets of 16-axle, side
by side self-propelled modular transports
(SPMT) with turntables, a company
spokesperson said.
For this part of the journey temporary
road modifications had to be carried out
to accommodate the size and weight of the
column. In total, 300 trees were removed
and replanted along the route; a concrete
foundation was also prepared to stabilise
the ground for the lift to take place. It took
eight hours to transport the column along

"It was indeed a challenging task.
However, as a one-stop heavy haulage and
lifting solutions provider to the oil and
gas and petrochemical industries, we have
the experience and expertise to meet this
challenge for our client effectively.”
Also on site from Tiong Woon is a
600 tonne capacity Terex CC 2800-1
configured with a 66 m main boom and
78 m luffing jib, and a 300 tonne capacity
Terex CC 1800 with 42 m main boom.
The cranes are being used to erect and
dismantle the upper structure of the tower
system and to erect the base, respectively.
The project is estimated to cost
S$2.9 billion (US$ 2.3 billion) and is due
for completion in 2014.
