November-December 2013
T
his issue we are celebrating 30 years of reporting on the access
industry. It’s been a remarkable three decades since Paul Adorian,
founder of IPAF, started
Access Now
! Over the next 10 years Paul
grew the title, then IPAF’s own magazine, into a greatly admired and
valuable industry resource. It was bought by KHL in 1993, and since then
has been firmly established as the leading international magazine in the
powered access market.
I have been on board for just over a year now and feel privileged to be
part of a dynamic industry that has come such a long way in three short
decades, yet has so much still to offer. At its heart lies safety, which will
be a key element of the exponential growth many of us are expecting,
particularly in emerging markets.
I’m sure you will have seen the articles and site reports from
AI
issues
gone by that have been repeated in the pages of this magazine throughout
the year. Starting on page 25 of this issue is the 30th anniversary feature,
including a timeline of key events across the decades and views from a
number of leading industry figures, who provide their thoughts on where
we are heading.
Indeed, throughout this issue there is a real focus on the future, and the
international landscape. On page 10, Skyjack president Brad Boehler tells
Lindsey Anderson about the company’s plans in the world market.
Then there is the annual Confidence Survey, with some striking
insights into how rental companies, manufacturers and end users view
their prospects for the year ahead. The prognosis overall is a good one,
but there is no doubt, even in growing markets, sellers and users of access
equipment are keeping a close eye on costs.
Following that we have a focus on China’s rental market, and its
manufacturer’s plans for export. Then there is a feature about how the
economy is affecting Italian producers, closely followed by a round-up of
the illuminating Europlatform conference in Istanbul, Turkey.
Top that off with a report of new launches at the ICUEE exhibition
in the USA, and I hope you will be left with a sense of how the industry
sees itself in the modern world and where it plans to go over the next
thirty years.
Talking about celebrating the industry, don’t forget to enter the
International Awards for Powered Access (IAPA) - see the preview on
page 13.
Here’s to some great decades ahead.
