could move easily in European cities, which
tend to be smaller than in the USA, with
narrow historical town centres where there is
no access for large loaders.
“Versatility is linked to the wide range
of attachments you can use,” he said, “but
also reliability to do the job by saving time
and by increasing productivity, and easy
maintenance on site by the operators. It’s
reducing the maintenance costs allowing better
productivity.” He added that increasingly,
better fuel efficiency was important because
the cost of fuel was higher in Europe than in
the USA. “For instance,” he said, “on the new
Gehl V400/Mustang 4000 V, we introduced a
new cooling fan controlled by hydraulics to
reduce fuel consumption and noise.”
COMFORT IN THE CAB
Comfort was important for European
customers, according to Mr Chatillon, who
said some customers were concerned about
vibration noise outside and inside the cabin.
He added that in Europe, his company sold
more closed cabins than in the USA to meet
customer needs for comfort.
One area that JCB is concentrating on
with the launch of two new compact wheeled
loading shovels is fuel efficiency and using
its own engine. The new models, the 411 and
417, are powered by the low emission Ecomax
diesel engine, which JCB claims delivered
improved fuel consumption, reduced noise
and increased productivity. The new models
are also said to have a larger operator’s cab
with improved ergonomics, a new high lift arm
option on the 417 for increased versatility, and
improved lift capacity.
The 417 – which replaces the previous
416 – and the revised 411 feature JCB’s new
generation appearance, with a new single-
piece bonnet that is said to help with service
and loading performance. The 411 is also said
to benefit from improved fuel efficiency with
the 68 kW (91 hp) version of JCB’s Ecomax
Stage IIIB engine.
The 411 is available with both standard and
super high lift loader configurations, with the
standard arms offering a pin height of 3.5 m
(11.5 ft) and a dump height of 2.6 m (8.5 ft)
when using a 1.2m
3
(42.4 ft

) bucket.
JCB also has a line-up of 17 new generation
skid steer and compact track loaders. The
company claims that the machines are
16% more fuel efficient than rival models
and would save customers around €2,000
(US$2,700) annually. The new machines
include nine large platform models – the 225,
260, 280, 300 and 330 wheeled skid steers, and
the 225T, 260T, 300T and 320T track loaders.
access and visibility. In the new cab, there is
a new full-colour LCD monitor, and a menu
system that provides a wide range of real-time
information for the operator. The cab also
benefits from reduced noise levels and, for the
first time on machines of this size, JCB will
offer full climate control air conditioning as an
option.
The 417 uses a 93 kW (125 hp) version of
JCB’s Ecomax Stage IIIB engine. This drives
through a ZF four-speed transmission to
JCB axles front and rear, with a transmission
disconnect feature incorporated into the
service brake pedal, which JCB said would
deliver further fuel-saving benefits.
The company added that the engine offered
a fuel efficiency gain of up to 15% compared to
the previous engine without any loss of digging
