but we needed something different. We
approached Goldhofer, and although they
didn’t have what we needed, they stepped
up to the plate and designed this new
trailer to meet our needs.”
The new THP-DR that will be shown
at ConExpo is not the one that Totran
ordered because Miller said his new
units will be working immediately upon
delivery.
“The first units will hit North America
at the end of February,” he said. “Our first
job will be in mid-March.”
Miller said the new THP-DR will give
his company a competitive edge.
“There’s a lot of cargo moving between
Canada and the U.S. being built
overseas and that’s our focus,” he said.
“That’s how we make our living, and
this new transporter will give us more
opportunities.”
The THP-DR dual-lane modular trailer
from Goldhofer is designed for transports
on public highways. It has a maximum
axle load of 52.9 pounds at a speed of
25 mph. The basic width of 14 feet is
adjustable, and the wheel sets to 16, 18
and 20 feet. It features axle spacing of
14 feet, 1 inch to meet road regulations
in the U.S. and Canada. Wheel sets are
mounted to the frame by means of ball-
bearing race rings and it is equipped
with 6-foot-wide axles. The hydraulic
axle suspension has a total stroke of 27.5
inches for compensation of uneven terrain
and best slope angle. The unit features a
hydro-mechanical steering system with
a maximum steering angle of 60 degrees.
Two and four axle modules are available
to combine for different configurations.
“The advantages for the customer of
this unit is the high flexibility due to
various combination possibilities to adjust
capacity and loading platform to the
loads that need to be transported,” said
Horst Haefele, sales director, heavy duty
modules, Goldhofer. “Contrary to the
previous 16-foot-wide dual-lane trailers,
the mobilization and demobilization with
14-foot basic width allows to move it
without police escort in certain states.”
He said the new transporter offers quick
set-up, less equipment for mobilization,
which means cost savings.
“This offers fast and easy changing
of trailer width by rotating the wheel
sets even in full laden condition and no
need to unload and reload the trailer
combination when a different width is
required for specific roads or crossing a
bridge,” said Haefele. “It will offer time
and money savings because there is no
need for a crane or handling device for
unloading the trailer or modifying the
trailer width.”
Goldhofer has invested more than 2,600
engineering hours into the new trailer,
which has already paid off in the form
of orders of 48 axle lines from three
customers in the U.S. and Canada, Haefele
said.

will also make major news at ConExpo
when it shows its first highway trailer

new model is the result of a cooperative

designed, dual-lane trailer
this month at ConExpo.
Designed for the North American market,
the first units of the THP-DR have been
sold to Alberta, Canada-based Totran
Transportation Services Ltd.
Rob Miller, president of Totran, recently
travelled to Goldhofer’s Germany-based
factory to see the new unit in testing.
“Totran is proud to have collaborated
in the design of the new innovative
THP-DR dual-lane trailer,” Miller said.
“The 24 lines Totran has purchased will
significantly increase Totran’s capacity
across North America. Totran’s experience
in the market has shown a need for
additional capacity for specialized cargo
for our clients, and the THP-DR dual-lane
trailer will be a major step for Totran in
solving this need.”
Miller said the new trailer design has
been in the works for about a year.
“We are a carrier that works all over
North America in the heavy haul market,”
he said. “We’ve used dual-lane trailers,
