Rental outlook
Go to the Videozone to seeMichael Kneeland,
CEO of theworld’s biggest rental company, United
Rentals, interviewed at the recent International
Rental Exhibition (IRE).
M
ichael Kneeland, the chairman of US-based United Rentals was
interviewed by I
nternational Rental News (IRN)
editor in chief,
Murray Pollok at the International Rental Exhibition (IRE). In
interview on the
Mr Kneeland gives his views on
the state of the industry from his vantage point as the head of the world’s
largest construction equipment rental company,
Of the North Americanmarket, which is United Rentals’ sole focus, Mr
Kneeland said, “We’ve seen a significant pick up in rental penetration. We
see that holding and then the volume coming back as the economy heals.
[Non-residential construction] is comingback, but it’s comingback at a very
slowpace. That’s a healthy thing for our industry, becausewe’re not going to
have to rush out and buy a load of equipment.”
Another question for Mr Kneeland was whether there were any plans to
expand United Rentals footprint outside of its home market. “It’s not a
question of ‘If?’, but ‘When?’ We don’t know. We want to find out what’s
available to us, but we’re not in any great rush. North America is still the
biggest opportunity for us,” he said.

F
orecasters were cautious with their outlooks
for rental growth last year, and with good
reason – North America apart, 2012 did not
live up to its promise, and the same uncertainties
that held economies back two years ago remained
relativelyunchangedat the startof2013.
But in theend,apicturehasemergedofa relatively
stable year,with themomentumbehind the recovery
in North America contrasting with a still-sluggish
Europe and a falteringAustralia. And this came amid
modest growth from emerging countries, where
fledgling rentalmarketsare stillgainingground.
