higher than last year and those expecting no
growth has dropped a little, while further
along the graph the declines have risen.
Two comments from the region are: “The
Australian market has been depressed for two
years. next year will bring opportunities and
challenges when the market improves and
rental companies start to update fleets,” and,
“In Sydney return on investment will decline
as particular companies get super aggressive
on larger scale projects. This usually feeds
down to the smaller clients expecting the same
rates for their equipment.”
Emerging markets
In Asia Pacific the mood is even more buoyant
than last year, albeit marginally. Comments
include, “There will be great potential as
there will be more strict safety regulation, “
and, “The demand for aerial platform should
increase and rental rates will increase in 2014.”
For Africa and the Middle East
expectations of growth are almost identical to
last year, but there is an emergence of doubt
this year with 1% – 10% decline at 12.5%,
where it was zero in last year’s table. “There

will be more demand for 2014 but it will be
tempered by an increase in new entries to the
rental market,” said one company.
And in South America there is almost a
unanimous verdict that the market will rise
by 1% – 10% next year, but that is likely to be
based largely in Brazil. There will be some
declines, say the survey results, but they will
be minimal. “In Brazil, the trend [towards
access equipment] is growing greatly because
it is still a very primitive market,” and, “The
clients’ safety requirements are permanently
increasing,” say respondents.
Last but not least, on the Indian
subcontinent confidence is still strong with
expected growth, although it is not as strong
as last year, particularly in the 1% - 10%
growth area. Those falls have shuffled along
to the 1% – 10% decline and more than 10%
decline sections of the graph, where last
year there was hardly any expectation of falls.
However, comments were generally
positive. “India will show a good upswing
with projects being launched,” and, “In
India the market is growing,” said two
of the companies.
