planning and engineering
work, Mountain Crane
Services installed a new
cold trainmodule at a
Chevron refinery in Salt
Lake City.

s theoft-used adage goes,
time ismoney. Sowhen
Chevrondecided to replace
the crudeunit cold train at its Salt Lake
CityRefinery, therewas extreme concern
about thepotential for downtime.
Tomitigate this potential, itwas decided
to fully construct thenew cold train
modules off-site and then to transport
andhoist them into their final location.
To save additional time, thedemolition

newunitwere scheduled tohappen
during apreviously scheduled crudeunit
turnaround.
Chevron selectedSalt LakeCity-based
MountainCrane Service to executepre-
lift planning, transportation andhoisting
of themodules. Chevronwas familiar
withMountainCrane’s expertise in lift
planning andworking in refineries.
Year-long planning
MountainCrane startedplanning the
transportation and critical lifts over a
Mountain Crane’s engineering team
workedwith Chevron to develop a 127-
page lift plan that included nearly 50
3-D drawings that detail rigging, module
transportation, crane erection, demolition
of the existing cold train unit, installation
of the new cold trainmodules and ground
bearing pressures for all lifting scenarios.
Refined
rigging
During demolition theManitowoc 2250 only
had two feet of clearance on its tail swing to
existing structures.
