Standing at 432m (1,418 ft) tall, the
Omega Transmission Tower in Darriman
in Victoria, Australia, was the tallest
structure in the southern hemisphere
until it was brought to earth by explosive
charges by Liberty Industrial.
The redundant Naval communications
tower was successfully brought down by
the project team that included experienced
explosive demolition experts, structural
engineers and a licenced shot firer, who
carefully engineered and precisely executed
the safe and controlled demolition of the
structure. Explosive cutting charges were
used to sever the tower’s inner support
cables, causing the lattice truss tower to
destabilise and collapse upon itself in four
large sections.
As a precaution, traffic on the adjoining
South Gippsland Highway was halted
for a short time while the demolition
was undertaken and representatives
from Victoria Police,Worksafe and the
Department of Defence attended the
demolition to observe, record and support
the project.
Once on the ground and all charges
accounted for, the team began clearing
the resulting debris using a 36 tonne
excavator before removing thematerial
from site for recycling.

Birmingham, UK, headquarteredCity Demolition has added aGeneracDF75000MPT Dustfighter tomeet its
requirement for a self-contained dust suppression unit thatwould protect all siteworkers from the effects
of airborne dust. Supplied by UK dealer ACE Plant, theDF75000MPT Dustfighter is a self-contained dust
suppression unit that produces a finemist ofwater through a series of high-pressure jets. Themist is propelled
onto the site by a powerful fan, covering awide area in just a fewmoments, rendering the area free from
unhealthy and hazardousmaterials. The unit is entirely self-contained, with an on board generating set and
water tank, which alleviates the need for any additional or ancillary equipment.
TheDF75000MPT Dustfighter is commonly fitted onto a site-tow chassis to allow rapid deployment but City
Demolition specified that its unit bemounted onto an adaptedHook-Lift frame to allow its own hooklift trucks
to be used, making offloading and reloading safe, quick and easy to plan. A storage binwas also added to allow
City Demolition site staff to store tools and equipment in one complete secure set-up.
